Six hundred paces from the Bull Ring is The Custard Factory, Birmingham's revolutionary new arts and media quarter. Built 100 years ago, it produced the nation’s favourite pudding, Bird’s Custard.
Now it is home to a hive of young creative companies, galleries, fine artists, independent shops and terrific restaurants. One of Birmingham’s biggest nightclubs and a number of renowned live music venues are located here. All are part of a vigorous working community that knows how to party too.
Manifesto
Partly government funded, the Custard Factory is designed to protect and nourish small arts and media businesses. Free superfast broadband, low overheads, affordable rents, 24 hour access, top-notch security, simple and elegant spaces, a friendly and efficient reception bureau – all combine to make work less arduous and more playful.
The high concentration of young media-linked enterprises, artistic ventures and leisure industries mingle to create a welcoming, dynamic, cross-pollinating community – and make the Custard Factory a buzzing, congenial place to work.

The genesis of the Custard Factory is a love story. The wife of nineteenth century industrial chemist Alfred Bird was allergic to eggs: a tragic state of affairs because she loved puddings. Alfred devoted himself to making egg-free delicacies and came up with Custard Powder in 1837. Soon a favourite dessert up and down the nation, it even fed the British armed forces in the Boer, First and Second World Wars.
